Sumner County lies in the middle of
"Tornado Alley".  While they mostly occur
during the spring, tornadoes can and do
happen at any time of the year.  Are you
prepared?
Tornado Warnings and 9-1-1
When severe weather occurs, there are many emergencies
reported to 9-1-1.  The heavy rain, wind, and lightning associated
with severe weather can cause fires, auto accidents, flooding, and
other emergencies.  During these times, 9-1-1 is extremely busy
answering calls and dispatching responders.  When a tornado
warning is issued, the call load increases even more.
You should be prepared for severe weather at all times, and take
action when severe weather strikes.
Be Prepared
The following tips can help you prepared for severe weather.
  • Watch weather forecasts to check for the potential for severe
    weather
  • Know where you will seek shelter in the event of a tornado
warning.  Determine in advance the best place in your home
to seek shelter from tornadic winds.  If you do not have an
adequate shelter, contact your local police or fire department
to determine where public tornado shelters are located.
When a tornado warning is issued is not the time to call 9-1-1
to look for shelter...know where your shelter is in advance!
  • If a tornado warning is issued, seek shelter!  Do not call 9-1-1
to verify if the tornado warning is valid.  You will only waste
valuable time needed to seek shelter.  If you think the
warning if false, check local media to determine if there has
    been a warning issued.
