TTY (Text Telephones)
Sumner County 911 Emergency Communications
SUMNER COUNTY, KANSAS
Sumner County 911 Emergency Communications

TTY stands for Text Telephone. A TTY is a special device that lets people who are deaf, hard of
hearing, or speech-impaired use the telephone to communicate, by allowing them to type messages
back and forth to one another instead of talking and listening. A TTY is required at both ends of the
conversation in order to communicate.
In accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, Sumner County Emergency Communications is
equipped and trained in the use of TTY (Text Telephones). Dispatch computers are equipped with
TTY software that automatically detects the Baudot signals transmitted by text telephones and opens
for interaction with the caller. Communication is effected by typing messages between the dispatcher
and the caller, all transmitted by telephone line. In the event of computer or software failure, the
department utilizes a manual text telephone machine which allows the telephone handset to be
attached to acoustic couplers on the machine.
TTY is not "text messaging", which is SMS messaging using cellular telephones. Sumner County
Emergency Communications does NOT have the ability to receive text messages, only TTY
transmissions.
