Inactive cell phones may still access 9-1-1!
Please do not give inactive cell phones to children as toys.
While the technology is available to receive "enhanced" 9-1-1 calls with cellular
phones, the location technology has still not been perfected.  Until then,
follow these tips for using your cell phone to dial "9-1-1".

1. Keep abreast of your location at all times.  Be prepared to give your
location by address, intersection, highway milepost marker, well known
landmark, or other descriptive information that can lead emergency crews to
the scene.

2. Cell phone reception can be full of static, and sometimes calls are even
dropped.  If you have a bad connection or lose connectivity during the call,
call 9-1-1 again.

3. Cell phone transmissions can skip from tower to tower.  You may not be
connected to the closest 9-1-1 Center when you call on your cell phone.  Be
prepared to give full directions, including city and state to the 9-1-1 dispatcher.
SCEC has frequently received cell phone calls from travelers on Interstate 70 and
other areas of the state.

4. Many cell phone calls are made from outdoors.  Background noises such as wind
or passing traffic can hamper communications.  Speak clear, calmly, and directly into
the cell phone to make communicating as efficient as possible.
